ABA Therapy FAQ

Common Questions About Our Services

Click on any question below to reveal the answer.

Do you accept my insurance?

Two different things decide this, and it helps to keep them apart. What your plan covers: ABA therapy is a covered benefit under most plans when a child has a documented autism diagnosis and a doctor has established medical necessity, though the specifics vary by plan. Whether we can bill your plan: American Institute of Mental Health is an approved Florida Medicaid provider, private pay is welcome, and we are completing credentialing with major commercial and managed-care plans — until that is complete, services should not be treated as covered by those payers. Either way we check your benefits for free and tell you where you stand before anything is scheduled. Where we stand with each plan is here.

Does Florida Medicaid cover ABA therapy?

Yes. ABA therapy is a covered benefit for children with a documented autism diagnosis and documented medical necessity, and we are an approved Florida Medicaid provider — so for an eligible child there is no cost to the family. Call us and we verify your benefits and start the process. The full policy is here.

Do you speak Spanish?

Yes. Our team serves families in English and Spanish, with free interpreters available for any other language. Este sitio también está en español.

How do I get started with ABA at American Institute of Mental Health?

Getting started is simple! Contact us by phone at (786) 652-6945 or through our Contact Page to schedule a free consultation. Our team will walk you through the intake process, help verify your insurance, and answer any questions you may have. From there, we'll schedule an initial assessment with a BCBA to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your loved one's unique needs and goals.

How long does ABA therapy take to show results?

The timeline for results varies depending on the individual, the intensity of services, and the specific goals being targeted. However, many families begin to see meaningful progress within the first few weeks of consistent therapy. Some skills may develop quickly while others require longer-term intervention. Our BCBAs regularly review data and update treatment plans to ensure that each client is making steady, measurable progress toward their goals.

What ages do you serve?

All ages, from early intervention for toddlers of 18 months and up to adult services. Early intervention produces the best outcomes.

What areas do you serve?

All of South Florida: Miami Lakes, Doral, Hialeah, Kendall, Homestead, Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Monroe County and surrounding communities.

What documents do I need to start?

Usually an insurance card, a prescription with the autism diagnosis, a medical necessity letter, a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation if you have one, and the IEP if your child attends public school. If something is missing, our intake team helps you get it.

What does an ABA session look like?

An ABA session typically involves one-on-one interaction between the client and a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Sessions are designed to be play-based and naturalistic, making learning fun and engaging. Activities may include games, structured play, social interaction practice, daily living skill building, and communication exercises. Each session follows an individualized treatment plan, and data is collected to track progress and make adjustments as needed.

What is a BCBA?

A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) is a master's-level clinician who has completed advanced training in behavior analysis and has passed a national certification exam. BCBAs are responsible for conducting assessments, designing individualized treatment plans, overseeing therapy sessions, training RBTs, and collaborating with families to ensure the best possible outcomes. They serve as the clinical supervisors of your child's ABA program.

What is ABA Therapy?

ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. It is widely recognized as the gold standard in evidence-based treatment for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ABA therapy uses scientifically validated techniques to understand behavior and how it is affected by the environment. Through systematic interventions, ABA helps improve socially significant behaviors such as communication, social skills, daily living skills, and academic performance while reducing challenging behaviors.

What is an RBT?

An RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) is a trained paraprofessional who provides direct, one-on-one ABA therapy to clients. RBTs work under the supervision of a BCBA and are responsible for implementing the individualized treatment plan during each session. They undergo rigorous training and certification to ensure they deliver high-quality, evidence-based interventions. RBTs are the team members who spend the most time working directly with your child.

Where do sessions take place?

In the home, at school, in community settings, and by telehealth. The setting is decided from your child's needs.

Who can benefit from ABA?

ABA therapy can benefit children and adults diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It is effective across all ages—from early intervention for toddlers as young as 18 months, to programs designed for school-age children, teens, and adults. ABA is also helpful for individuals with other developmental conditions or behavioral challenges. Each program is individually tailored to address the unique needs, strengths, and goals of the person receiving services.
